WHAT TO EXPECT - Before Session

It is helpful if you tell your child in advance a little about what to expect. Some things you might want to let them know:

You will stay with them the entire time;

The therapist will touch their body and head gently;

The reason you are coming is to help them feel better in their body;

They know their body best and their input is welcome.

Your child will be learning and processing a lot of information. This is easiest when they are as well nourished and rested as possible.

You will fill out intake forms that include giving the therapist permission to work with your child. Some therapists may request a phone conversation before the session or have forms to complete before you arrive. Please check when you schedule.

If you or your child is ill, please reschedule or check directly with your therapist.

WHAT TO EXPECT - During Session

We want you and your child to feel safe and supported throughout your experience - this is actually the most important element of any treatment. To foster this experience of safety and respect:

A parent or guardian will attend all sessions, and assist with the family feeling safe and engaged;

Treatments will be done fully clothed;

Therapists will ask for consent;

All modalities use light touch, which helps the body to feel safe and avoids traumatization;

The therapist will explain what they are noticing and treating;

Children will spend some time on the treatment table and some time playing, especially as they initially get to know the therapist. Our brains learn best when we are playing, so this is perfect. The proportion of playing/lying quietly will depend on the individual child, their developmental stage, that day, what is needed for treatment, etc;

The therapist may want to treat you or other members of the family. This is because you are all part of the same family system, and can affect one another;

You may receive homework/exercises to do at home. This is to support ongoing changes, and to help you to feel empowered to help your child/family;

You will pay the therapist directly before the end of the session. We do not accept insurance, but there are often scholarships available.

If you feel that you will need a scholarship, please indicate at the time of scheduling so that there are no surprises.

WHAT TO EXPECT - After Session

Children will usually have one of two reactions: either they will sleep heavily and be very relaxed after their session; or they will be very energized. Please be prepared for either possibility.

It is helpful to have some unscheduled time after the session. This gives the body and mind a chance to integrate changes.

Changes will continue for several days after the session. Any exercises or homework given by the therapist is to continue to support these changes. It is helpful if you can take note of differences.
