What is CranioSacral Therapy?

Craniosacral_edited_edited.jpg

Craniosacral Therapy (CST) is a gentle, hands-on method of evaluating and supporting the body to release restrictions that negatively affect function. It focuses on the soft tissues, the fluid body, and the central nervous system. It may also be called Cranial Sacral Therapy. Using a soft touch and following the cues of the body, practitioners help to release restrictions: asymmetries, lack of function, lack of vitality, or restriction of movement. Assisting the body with better Cerebral-Spinal Fluid (CSF) flow and freedom of movement has been shown to have wide-ranging positive effects. This includes improving the functioning of many body systems, not just the nervous system: digestive, musculoskeletal, respiratory, circulatory, and more. CST has also been shown to help with the physical components related to such somatic conditions as Post-Traumatic Stress, depression, and anxiety. By facilitating the body's natural and innate healing processes, CST is increasingly used as a preventive health measure for its ability to bolster resistance to disease and has been shown to be beneficial for people seeking help with a wide range of healthcare challenges and symptoms. There are several styles of CranioSacral Therapy practiced by our providers, all of which developed from the common root of osteopathic manipulation and the work of Andrew Stills, who studied with the medicine people of the Shawnee. The method known as CranioSacral Therapy (CST) was pioneered and developed by osteopathic physician John E. Upledger following extensive scientific studies from 1975 to 1983 at Michigan State University, where he served as a clinical researcher and Professor of Biomechanics. Hugh Milne teaches Visionary Cranial Sacral Work, combining his osteopathic background (3rd generation practitioner) with intuition, art, psychology, and culture. Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy emphasizes the energetic component of imbalances in the body.

Massage Therapy addresses the muscles, tendons, and ligaments of the body. Neural/Neuromeningeal Manipulation Treatments address the brain, spinal cord, and peripheral nerves. This delicate system acts as a communication highway throughout the body. When it is not operating well, pain and loss of function can result, both at the source and also in distant areas of the body.

Using a gentle hands-on therapy, the therapist searches for the pattern and the source, and works with the body to release restrictions and return to its best function.
